Drew has attended two, hour long, therapy sessions a week since his cochlear implants were activated in June of 2007. He sees a teacher for the Regional Infant Hearing Program, a therpist from the Auditory Oral Children’s Center and an SLP from Nationwide Children’s Hospital. We attend therapy to learn ways to stimulate Drew’s communication [...]

Drew’s receptive language is growing. He now understands, “Where are your shoes?” He will instantly stop whatever he is doing and begin the search to find his shoes. I piled his shoes up with a bunch of toys the other day and he was able to find them. He also understands me when I say, [...]

Comments heard in our house recently:
“Can Drew hear everything?”
“Does he understand everything?”
“Can you believe that he heard that?”
“Can you believe he just said that?”
“Did you just see how he noticed the difference between speech and music?”
This list goes on…
It just seems to us like Drew is hearing really, really well and his progress is showing [...]

Drew had his bi-weekly therapy with his teacher through the Regional Infant Hearing Program yesterday. My Mom took him to the appointment, as she does every time. Drew’s teacher is excellent and always sends me a detailed report of the session, and my Mom will always let me know how Drew did and tell me [...]

With a capital F, U and N! We are having so much FUN watching Drew’s language develop, both receptively and expressively.
I was getting ready for work on Wednesday morning and stopped by the kitchen table to say goodbye to Drew, his dad and sister while they were eating breakfast together. I noticed that Drew did [...]

We’ve all been sick with the flu. The nasty little bug caught Drew and he has spread it to the entire – ENTIRE – family, including the Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins that spent Christmas with us. I’m not sure if anyone will come back next year! In the midst of the sickness, Drew’s six [...]

It is amazing how language and communication skills are developed. Before Drew was born I never really realized all of the little pieces that go into developing communication – babbling, unintelligible communication, single words, two words, etc. Unless something is taken from you – or nearly taken from you – it is hard to have [...]

Drew is talking…a lot. But what happened to Mama?!?
Drew has quite the personality. I think he is saying “Dada” on purpose! Every time I ask him to say “Mama” he says “Dada”. Actually, my daughter did the exact same thing. She said “ma ma ma ma” first and then went months before she said it [...]

Drew is babbling! We have heard all sorts of “ma ma,” “da da” and “ba ba” combinations over the past week. It started last Friday, November 2, when he said a whole string of “ma” while we were eating dinner. He is such a happy little guy and we are so happy listening to him [...]
